Transport Layer Security (SSL)

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a predecessor to the transport layer security. They are cryptographic protocols that offer security and data integrity over networks like the internet for the purpose of communication. These protocols are used widely in applications such as instant messaging, internet faxing, web browsing, voice over IP and electronic mail.

Transport Layer Security protocols permits client-server applications to network through communication in a manner that does away with message forgery, tampering and eavesdropping. It offers authenticity and confidentiality in communication over the internet by the use of cryptography. The transport layer security system is associated with three fundamental phases that enable it to function effectively.
