Data is nothing but an electro magnetic signal which may be a radio wave or infra red wave or just an electrical voltage. They are transmitted by using a transmission media between the terminals.
A physical transfer of information and concern things like synchronization, bit polarity, clock etc is said to be a transmission. The actual exchange of information between two communication media is nothing but the communication. Thus communication is different from transmission. There are two types of transmission available.
• Broadcast
• Point to point
In broadcast, one terminal transmits the data to all the other terminals. So, a single data is transmitted to many points. It is otherwise called as one to many relationships. But in the case of point to point, the transmission takes place between exactly two points. This type of transmission is otherwise called as one to one relationship.
There are three possible ways of data exchange. They are as follows.
*
Simplex
*
Half-duplex
*
Full duplex.
Simplex refers to single direction of data exchange. The data is transmitted from one point to another point. Half duplex data exchange refers to the two ways of data exchange that is from sender to receiver and then from receiver to sender. Full duplex also refers to the two way data transmission which takes place at the same time.
The transmission may be baseband or broadband. In a baseband transmission, a single signal consumes the entire bandwidth in a baseband type of transmission. This baseband is used in optical communication, wired LANs and in some serial cables. Multiple signals are sent at the same time with different frequencies in a broadband type of transmission. The broadband is used for high speed internet.
Another classification of transmission includes serial and parallel transmissions. Serial transmission corresponds to the sequential transmission of elements as single bit or character. Parallel transmission refers to the simultaneous signal transmission. The chances of error occurrence are more in serial transmission than in parallel transmission. Thus serial transmission is used in parity checking. But parallel is comparatively faster than the serial transmission. This parallel transmission is used in internal buses which carry data and control signals.
The above mentioned features are different types of data transmissions which enrich the networking concepts. These data transmission techniques vary with the type of the networks.
